ETH Board appoints new professors

At its meeting on 28 and 29 September 2010, the ETH Board appointed five new professors to the ETH Zurich.

Upon application of the President of the ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler, the ETH Board has appointed the following individuals as full professors at the ETH Zurich:

  • Fabio Gramazio (*1970), currently Assistant Professor of Architecture and Digital Fabrication, as Full Professor of Architecture and Digital Fabrication with a 60% teaching load. Fabio Gramazio is co-founder of the artists’ collective, etoy, and the architecture firm, Gramazio & Kohler, and is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the fields of architecture and digital fabrication. His most famous works are the Christmas lights in Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse and an industrial robot facility for teaching and research.
  • Matthias Kohler (*1968), currently Assistant Professor of Architecture and Digital Fabrication, as full Professor of Architecture and Digital Fabrication with a 60% teaching load. Matthias Kohler is co-founder of the architecture firm, Gramazio & Kohler, and an internationally acclaimed researcher in the fields of architecture and digital fabrication. His most famous works are the Christmas lights in Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse and an industrial robot facility for teaching and research.
  • Martin Raubal (*1968), currently Associate Professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (USA), as Full Professor of Geoinformation Engineering. Martin Raubal is an internationally leading researcher in the field of geoinformation sciences. His interdisciplinary approaches to research combine geoinformation sciences with information technology and cognitive sciences. One of his focal points is the development and personalisation of mobile geoinformation services.
  • Nicola A. Spaldin (*1969), currently Professor and Director of the International Center for Materials Research at the University of California in Santa Barbara (USA), as Full Professor of Materials Theory. Nicola Spaldin has won several awards for her research in the field of coupling magnetic and electric material properties. Spaldin’s combination of basic research results with new, modern computing and simulation methods is particularly successful. These pave the way for the discovery and development of new materials.
  • Rainer Wallny (*1969), currently Associate Professor at the University of California in Los Angeles (USA), as Full Professor of Experimental Particle Physics. Rainer Wallny is an internationally outstanding particle physicist. He conducted the basic research into the structure of matter in large-scale particle accelerators, the Tevatron at the Fermilab in Chicago and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. In 2007, he received an Outstanding Junior Investigator Award from the US Department of Energy for his high-precision measurement of a top quark, the heaviest known elementary particle.

The ETH Board has appointed the following individuals as associate professors at the ETH Zurich:

  • Niklas Beisert (*1977), currently Head of the Research Group Duality & Integrable Structures at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam (Germany), as Associate Professor of Mathematical Physics. Niklas Beisert is a globally acclaimed top-class researcher in the field of mathematical physics. In 2007, Beisert received the renowned Gribov Medal of the European Physical Society for his pioneering results in the field of supersymmetric gauge theories and for his contributions towards a better understanding of a four-dimensional quantum field theory.
  • Siddhartha Mishra (*1980), currently Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Zurich, as Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics. Siddhartha Mishra is an outstanding researcher in the field of applied and numerical mathematics. His numerical methods allow for promising applications in astrophysics, for nuclear fusion and in the engineering sciences. One of his focal research points is the development of software for massively parallel computers.

The ETH Board has appointed the following individuals as assistant professors:

  • Damien Calaque (*1979), currently Maître de conférences at the Université de Lyon, as Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Damien Calaque is a very versatile mathematician, whose research links various areas of algebra and geometry with concepts of mathematical physics. In particular, he makes use of the so-called deformation theory of algebras that are inspired by the physical idea of quantisation.
  • Rudiyanto Gunawan (*1976), currently Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore, as Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biological System Engineering. Rudiyanto Gunawan is a globally leading scientist in the field of chemical-biological systems analysis. His approach to research combines methods from the engineering sciences with mathematical modelling and concepts of biology. Gunawan has made important contributions to programmed cell death and the ageing of mitochondria.
  • Johannes Muhle-Karbe (*1980), currently University Assistant at the University of Vienna, as Assistant Professor of Financial Mathematics. Johannes Muhle-Karbe is an outstanding scientist in the field of financial mathematics. His research focuses on the mathematical modelling of complex questions of the globally interlinked financial market system. His contributions – such as that on transaction costs – bear witness to a well-founded understanding of economic practice.
  • Pierre Nolin (*1983), currently Instructor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, as Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Pierre Nolin is an excellent mathematician, whose research work in the field of probability theory has received a high degree of international attention. His methodically diverse research paves the way for important links with mathematical physics and models of physics.
  • Arno Schlüter (*1974), Scientist (Research and Teaching) at the ETH Zurich, as Assistant Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Building Technologies. Arno Schlüter is the founder of two companies (werkraum GmbH, keoto AG) which develop software for construction processes and create digital building models. Arno Schlüter is an extremely innovative researcher in the field of sustainable building theories and their consistant linkage with new information-technological methods of construction planning.

The following SNF professors were appointed as assistant professors:

  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Peter Burg (*1975) as Assistant Professor of Electronic Systems for Signal Processing.
  • Prof. Dr. Vittorio Ferrari (*1976) as Assistant Professor of Computer Vision.
  • Prof. Dr. Aude Gehrmann-De Ridder (*1970) as Assistant Professor of Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics.
  • Prof. Dr. Fumiya Iida (*1974) as Assistant Professor of Bio-Inspired Robotics.
  • Prof. Dr. Salomé Leibundgut-Landmann (*1973) as Assistant Professor of Infection Immunology.
  • Prof. Dr. Engin Hakan Türeci (*1971) as Assistant Professor of Quantum Optoelectronics.
  • Prof. Dr. Christoph Vorburger (*1971) as Assistant Professor of Evolutionary Ecology.
  • Prof. Dr. Philipp Werner (*1975) as Assistant Professor of Theoretical Physics.

The following individuals were appointed as adjunct professors at the ETH Zurich:

  • Dr. Manfred P. Heuberger (*1965), currently Scientist and Lecturer at the ETH Zurich und Head of the Advanced Fibres Department at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa). Manfred P. Heuberger earned his excellent reputation in teaching and research with his scientific competence in surface force measurement and his research on the “confinement” of liquids, for which he conducted trail-blazing studies at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI).
  • Dr. Theo A. Tervoort (*1961), is a teacher and researcher of high international repute in the field of the mechanical properties of polymers. In his present research work, he is examining medicinal, ultra-high-molecular polyethylene and the finite deformation behaviour of anisotrope polymers. Moreover, Theo A. Tervoort is regarded as an excellent teacher with very good contacts with Swiss industry.
  • Dr. Ayodhya Nath Tiwari (*1958), currently Head of the Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) and founder of Flisom, a start-up specialising in optoelectronics. Ayodhya Nath Tiwari is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the field of high-efficiency thin-film solar cells. His developments include the highest performance coefficient in CIGS solar cells on glass substrates and the first flexible CIGS solar cells on plastic substrates.

Upon application of the Director of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Prof. Dr. Joël Mesot, the following individual has been appointed as Member of the Directorate of the PSI as from 1 October 2010:

  • Gebhard Franz Xaver Schertler has been Head of the Research Department Biology and Chemistry at the PSI since 1 January 2010. In addition he has been Professor of Structural Biology at ETH Zurich since September 2009. Gebhard Schertler’s expertise plays a key role in the application of new bioscientific methods in the Synchrotron Light Source (SLS) and the future free-electron X-ray laser SwissFEL. The Biology and Chemistry Research Department's three laboratories, the Centre for Radiopharmaceutical Sciences (CRS), the Laboratory for Biomolecular Research (BMR) and the Laboratory of Radiochemistry and Environmental Chemistry (REC) also conduct their research in close cooperation with ETH Zurich and with the Universities of Berne and Zurich.
